Special friendship
胡锦涛主席出访"枫叶之国"加拿大,愿中加友谊之树永远常青!
SIXTY-SEVEN years ago, Canadian doctor Norman Bethune gave up his easy life and travelled far from home to help Chinese people suffering in World War II. Thousands of lives were saved, but he lost his own because of blood poisoning.
"The selfless help of Dr Bethune is highly respected among the Chinese and will be remembered forever,"said Chinese President Hu Jintao, during his first official visit to Canada on September 9.
During Hu's two-day stay, China and Canada agreed to build a strategic partnership (战略伙伴关系) to steadily improve bilateral relations (双边关系). The two sides also made plans for co-operation on trade, energy, cultural exchanges and more.
People in China and Canada have had a great friendship for a long time. The earliest ties started in trade in 1780, when Canada was a British colony (殖民地). Chinese silk, china and tea were very popular among rich people there. During World War II, many Canadians, like Dr Bethune, made contributions to the Chinese victory.
In 1970, an official relationship was set up. Since then, there has been an increase in co-operation across many different areas. Bilateral trade has risen. China has become Canada's second biggest trade partner, following the US. A large amount of Canadian paper, wheat and electrical products flood into Chinese homes, while Chinese-made textiles (纺织品) and household appliances (家用电器) are favoured by many Canadians.

They have become the largest minority group there. Also, because the cost of studying in Canada is cheaper than that of the US and Europe, thousands of Chinese students go to Canadian universities every year. They study all kinds of subjects there and have become a big help in promoting bilateral communication.
Da Shan, whose English name is Mark Rowswell, is a well-known Canadian in China. He studied in Beijing and has become a popular comic star for Chinese viewers. Da Shan has acted as a special bridge between the two peoples for about 17 years.
"The Chinese value their friendship with Canadians very much,"said President Hu. He planted a young tree as a symbol of China-Canada relations at the home of Canadian Governor General in Ottawa. "I hope it will grow up to be strong and healthy, just like our friendship. "
